FAQs

What are fat quarters?

A fat quarter is a type of pre-cut piece of fabric, made by taking half a metre of fabric and then cutting it in half width-ways. When a standard half metre of fabric is cut into four equal quarters, you are left with fat quarters. The sizes can vary a little, but each fat quarter is generally about 55cm x 50cm in size.

Why are they called fat quarters?

Because they are cut in a different way to the way that fabric is normally cut. Fabric is normally cut in long, narrow strips. Fat quarters are cut a different way, into wider and shorter ‘quarters’ of fabric — making them “fat” in comparison to the more typical narrower, longer strips.
