Fabric Information
GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre and measures the weight of a fabric. Lower GSM fabrics are generally lighter and more breathable, while higher GSM fabrics are thicker and often more durable. The GSM listed on each product page helps you choose the right fabric for your sewing project.
Fabric width refers to the distance from one selvage edge to the other. Most fabrics on our website include the width in the product description, helping you calculate how much fabric you'll need for your project. Always consider both the width and length when planning your purchase
Yes. Most fabrics at Pound A Metre are sold by the metre, making it easy to order exactly the quantity you require. Product pages clearly state the unit of sale and any available purchasing options, including bundles or special offers where applicable.
For many sewing projects, prewashing fabric is recommended. Washing fabric before cutting can remove any finishing treatments and allows natural shrinkage to occur before construction. This is especially important for garments, children's clothing and quilts that will be washed regularly after completion.
Some natural fibres, including cotton and linen, may experience slight shrinkage after their first wash. Following the care instructions provided for the fabric can help minimise shrinkage and maintain the appearance of your finished project. Prewashing is often recommended where appropriate.
Sewing & Quilting
100% quilting cotton is one of the most popular choices for quilting thanks to its durability, stability and ease of sewing. Its tight weave helps create neat seams and accurate patchwork, making it suitable for beginners and experienced quilters alike.
Cotton fabrics are widely recommended for beginners because they are stable, easy to cut and simple to sew. They hold their shape well, making them ideal for practising sewing techniques, creating accessories, home décor projects and learning garment construction.
